Isogrid structures and Sandwich panels: advantages and features

The aerospace sector is constantly looking for new solutions that could provide advantages in the production and assembly of finished parts. Examples to be considered are certainly the Isogrid structures and the Sandwich panels.

The Isogrid structures consist of a solid sheet reinforced by a series of ribs with a triangular configuration. The Sandwich panels, on the other hand, are made up of two external rigid layers, spaced by a low-density core typically with honeycomb cells.

Both solutions are mostly used in the aerospace sector, where reduced weights and high mechanical resistances are extremely necessary, but they are also increasingly used in the Automotive and Motosport field.

The production of sandwich panels and isogrid structures through traditional manufacturing techniques may require several manufacturing steps, generating a considerable amount of material waste and a high cost of the final product. Moreover, when the process involves the use of different materials for sheets and ribs, production costs and time increase further.

Roboze additive production: what is about?

Roboze 3D printing solutions are developed to face these challenge, by offering the chance to produce parts with complex geometries such as structures having small ribs with variable infills.

The additive manufacturing model proposed by Roboze consists in the fusion of a filament using only the necessary material, eliminating almost all waste: the production of the part takes place using only the necessary material, with considerable advantages in terms of production costs and times.

The further advantage provided by Roboze 3D printing systems is the wide range of high performance materials available for the realization of these structures: it is possible to produce very complex parts with extremely light super polymers and composite materials, such as PEEK, Carbon PEEK, Carbon PA and ULTEM ™ AM9085F, that are at the same time resistant to high temperatures, to aggressive chemical agents and mechanically suitable for extreme applications.

Studies and characterization processes have already demonstrated the validity of 3D printing for the realization of these structures. As demonstrated by a characterization published by Università Politecnica delle Marche about isogrid structures printed in Roboze Carbon PA, by optimizing the process parameters it is possible to obtain a maximum specific load greater than 0.31 kN / g.

Having the chance to produce sandwich panels and isogrid structures with moderate costs and in a short time allows the implementation of similar solutions also in those sectors where their use has been limited so far, because of problems associated with the use of traditional manufacturing.
